The celeb world has gone color crazy – literally.
It started with the dip-dye trend last year when rebellious grungy roots became the most desired look on the planet, and then the likes of Nicki Minaj burst onto the scene with her outlandish multi-colored tresses giving everyone a taste of the rainbow.
Since then, even girls who usually play it safe in the hair colour department have transformed into positive color chameleons. Katy Perry has gone purply-pink, Charlotte Church is tomato red, Sienna Miller has strawberry streaks, Dianna Agron’s gone fluorescent fuchsia and even Kate Bosworth is sporting turquoise tips.
Whilst we love the risk-taking and adore a fun and unusual hairstyle trend, not all the looks have been winners.
In the hot corner sit Sienna and Kate, whose two-tone manes swerve any unpleasant root dramas. They’ve also been cleverly pairing their clothes to their hair, reminding us that their choices are very much trend-led and that they’re wearing the look, not the other way round.
In the not-so-hot corner falls Charlotte, Dianna and the usually flawless Katy Perry. Charlotte’s shocking red totally washes out her complexion and really doesn’t sit well with her safe, basic outfits. Dianna’s collection of pink tones look like she colored her hair at home in the dark, and Katy often falls into the trap of rocking her blue mane unstyled, with greasy roots and frizzy ends. Also, in the losers column are girls who haven’t stepped up their makeup game to match their bright, daring styles. For anyone itching to experiment with color we have this tip: make sure your makeup matches your hair in its intensity. Take a look at how Katy Perry goes nuts on the makeup front to match the intensity of her electric blue locks. Without the hair color her makeup might look at little overdone, but when she puts the two together it works perfectly.
So let that be a warning to you girls – be creative with your colour but play it safe with your face.
And if you’d love a colour change but are a bit of a commitment phobe why not try a wig (circa Katy Perry before she hit the bottle), or try a semi-permanent dye like Manic Panic (the clear leader in extreme hair color). But do it on a dry day – we’ve seen it go horribly wrong in the rain!
If you want to emulate Perry’s extreme blue locks you can get the look using Manic Panic Shocking Blue.
Ashley Olsen’s subdued blue and turquoise streaks are a great addition to her California beach girl locks.
Extreme hair color has made an appearance on the runway from designer Altazurra. This patch of shocking blue is a tough look to pull off, but one thing’s for sure: you’ll definitely stand out from the crowd!
Lavigne’s cool mulit-colored locks offer a great frame for her face, and the random, haphazard styling is a fantastic reflection of her grungy, rebellious personality.
We can’t get enough of Lily Allen’s cotton candy pink mane.
